Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. It is a walnut sized gland that sits at the base of the urinary bladder. It makes a fluid which goes into semen. It surrounds the urethra through which urines passes to leave the bladder. BPH is when the prostate gland enlarges, constricting the urethra and causing lower urinary tract symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty starting urination, and weak or interrupted urination
  • Difficulty controlling urination or a sudden urgency to urinate
  • Increased frequency of urination, especially at night

It can also contribute to erectile dysfunction and increases the risk of prostate cancer.

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)

PAE is a novel minimally invasive procedure to treat BPH and it’s associated symptoms. A tiny catheter is passed through the arteries to the prostate gland and microscopic beads are injected into the prostate gland depriving it of oxygen, and causing it to shrink.

PAE is an alternative to drug and surgical BPH treatment options. If any of the following are true for you, you may be a candidate for PAE:

  • You have BPH or are experiencing the symptoms of BPH
  • You’re wanting to preserve sexual function through BPH therapy
  • You are unable to tolerate medication for BPH
  • You are either not a candidate for, or do not want surgical treatment

PAE is an outpatient procedure and you will return home the same day and resume normal activities the next day. As the blood flow to the prostate gland decreases, the gland will shrink and your lower urinary tract symptoms will begin to resolve.

If you would like a consultation for PAE, schedule online or call RCI at 319-261-0636.
